Exploring the Best Kayaking and SUP Spots Accessible by Boat in the British Virgin Islands

As a frequent boat charterer in the beautiful British Virgin Islands (BVI), I'm thrilled to share my favorite kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) spots that you can easily access by mooring your boat. These locations offer stunning scenery, calm waters, and a chance to explore the BVI from a unique perspective. Plus, I'll provide insights on whether you should rent equipment or join a guided tour. Let's dive in!

Top Kayaking and SUP Spots Accessible by Boat in the BVI

1. North Sound, Virgin Gorda

I highly recommend launching your kayak or SUP in North Sound, which offers a vast, protected bay with numerous mooring options. Here, you can explore various cays and islands, such as Prickly Pear Island and Eustatia Island. The calm waters and abundant marine life make this an ideal spot for both kayaking and paddleboarding adventures.

2. Norman Island

Another favorite of mine is Norman Island. Tie up in The Bight at Norman Island, a popular spot with ample mooring balls. From here, paddle around the island to discover hidden coves, sea caves, and pristine beaches. The island is steeped in pirate lore, adding an adventurous twist to your journey. Whether kayaking or SUP, you’ll find plenty to explore.

3. White Bay, Jost Van Dyke

For a lively atmosphere, Anchor your boat in White Bay. Known for its stunning white sandy beaches and vibrant beach bars, White Bay is a must-visit. SUP or kayak along the coast, stop for a refreshing drink at Soggy Dollar or any other local beach bar, and soak in the vibrant vibes.

4. Leverick Bay, Virgin Gorda

Leverick Bay in North Sound is another excellent spot with great mooring facilities. From here, I suggest paddling to nearby Mosquito Island to explore its beautiful coastline. The calm waters and stunning surroundings make for a peaceful and enjoyable kayaking or paddleboarding experience.

5. The Dogs

The Dogs, a group of small islands situated between Tortola and Virgin Gorda, are perfect for an adventurous paddling trip. Moor your boat in the sheltered anchorages around Great Dog or George Dog, and launch your kayak or SUP to explore the rugged coastlines and clear waters. These islands are also fantastic for snorkeling, so be sure to bring your gear along.  Make sure to check conditions as this area can be affected by the weather and sea state making it very challenging for paddling.

6. Peter Island

Peter Island is one of my top recommendations. It offers several excellent mooring spots, such as Great Harbour and Little Harbour. From here, you can paddle around the island’s beautiful coastline, discovering secluded beaches and hidden coves. The clear waters and stunning landscapes make it a perfect destination for both kayaking and SUP.

7. Fallen Jerusalem

Last but certainly not least, I recommend Fallen Jerusalem. This small, uninhabited island near Virgin Gorda is a hidden gem. Moor your boat in the designated NPS anchorage area and set off to explore the island's rugged terrain by kayak or SUP. Paddle around the rocky coastline, discovering hidden coves and pristine waters. The island's untouched beauty and serene atmosphere provide a unique and captivating paddling experience. This location is also affected by weather and sea conditions and should only be used when the North Swell is not present.

Kayak and SUP Rental vs. Guided Tours

When it comes to kayaking and paddleboarding in the BVI, you have two main options: renting equipment or joining a guided tour. Here’s what I suggest for each option:

Rental

Renting a kayak or SUP for your boat gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Our charters always have at least one rented Kayak or SUP onboard. We enjoy this as you can create your own itinerary, spend as much time as you want at each location, and enjoy a more personalized experience. It’s perfect for adventurous souls who love the thrill of discovering new places on their own.

However, keep in mind that renting requires some level of experience and confidence in navigating the waters. It’s essential to have a good understanding of the local tides, currents, and weather conditions to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

Guided Tours

If you’re new to kayaking or SUP or prefer a more structured experience, I recommend joining a guided tour. Knowledgeable guides will take you to the best spots, provide interesting information about the area, and ensure your safety throughout the trip. It’s a fantastic way to learn about the local environment and history while enjoying a hassle-free adventure.

Guided tours are also great for meeting other travelers and sharing the experience with like-minded individuals. Many tours offer additional perks, such as snorkeling stops, refreshments, and photography services, enhancing your overall experience.

Conclusion

Whether you choose to rent equipment or join a guided tour, kayaking and paddleboarding in the British Virgin Islands promises unforgettable adventures. From the tranquil waters of North Sound to the secluded beauty of Fallen Jerusalem, these mooring-accessible spots offer some of the best paddling experiences in the Caribbean. So, drop anchor, grab your paddle, and explore the breathtaking beauty of the BVI from the water.

Happy paddling and smooth sailing!
